The Bose QuietComfort Ultra earbuds have comparable noise cancelling with the Sony WF-1000XM5s, and we thoroughly enjoyed the Immersion mode which maximizes the active noise cancellation and sound to provide a cinematic listening experience. The QuietComfort Ultra earbuds also provide plenty of bass and volume; the bass feels extremely tight and punchy, and even has more depth than the WF-1000XM5 earbuds when it comes to EDM and rock music. Although the QuietComfort Ultra earbuds are somewhat larger than the WF-1000XM5s, they are very comfortable to wear and come with nine soft ear-tips to choose from. The Bose QuietComfort Ultra earbuds deliver some of the loudest sound performance we have heard from a pair of noise cancelling earbuds. You can really push up the volume on these earbuds and they will deliver consistently clean and loud sound performance with very deep bass performance. We played a couple of EDM and rock music performances and the bass sounded particularly deep (especially with Immersion mode), and the 3D spatial rendering of music objects gives the audio a wider soundstage. The earbuds also handle vocals extremely well – we played a couple of soundtracks including Tony Bennett’s “The Way You Look Tonight” and Dusty Springfield’s “The Look of Love” the vocals sounded very crisp with sparkling timbre ranges. The bass has plenty of depth and it adds tonal depth to vocals which makes the entire track feel very enjoyable to listen to. We also played a couple of EDM and hip-hop soundtracks including JVKE’s “Golden Hour” and thoroughly enjoyed the vocals and deep bass; the bass has more depth than we expected and really cuts deep. You will love these earbuds if you want loud volume and deep bass.

Compared to the Apple AirPods Pro, we found that the WF-1000XM5s deliver louder sound and heavier bass. We played a couple of EDM and hip-hop music genres on the XM5s and the sound was rich and very clear – you can even pick up subtle details in the music that you might not have noticed before, such as the breathing of the vocalist or plucking of guitar strings. With the active noise cancelling turned on, the soundstage on the WF-1000XM5s becomes incredibly clear and you can clearly distinguish between the bass and drum notes in the music. The Sony WF-1000XM5 has a very wide frequency range between 30 Hz to 30kHz, with an emphasis on the bass and mid-range frequencies which makes cellos and other bassy instruments really stand out. Despite the more bass leaning sound signature of the Sony WF-1000XM5s, we found that vocals were still very clear and we really liked how you can listen to every aspect of the sound at loud volume levels with virtually no distortion.
The Sony WF-1000XM5s use the latest Bluetooth 5.3 for wireless music streaming, and also supports AAC or LDAC Bluetooth codecs. One of the things we noticed is that these earbuds perform exceptionally well when using the DSEE audio streaming feature, which significantly improves the audio quality epescially if you are streaming from Spotify or Tidal. The sound quality is exceptionally clear even at high volume levels, and they produce a lot of bass with depth when listening to jazz and EDM music genres. We recommend keeping the DSEE option on when using the WF-1000XM5 earbuds.
Compared with the Sony WF-1000XM4s, the Sony WF-1000XM5s are much smaller and more compact – they are more comfortable than the XM4s and fit snugly into your ears without any issues. This makes wearing the XM4s around to the gym or for outdoor runs very enjoyable and you can ‘forget’ that you are even wearing these earbuds while doing workouts. We also liked the Sony earbuds that come with the XM5s – these earbuds isolation sound much better and improves the overall effect of the active noise cancellation. The noise cancellation on the Sony WF-1000XM5 really stands out and can effectively cancel up to 95% of ambient background noise and even close range conversations while turned on. The active noise cancellation is even more effective than the Airpods Pro and the XM4 earbuds and they can effectively block out noise and ambient sounds. We also liked the fact that the WF-1000XM5s do not have the same hissing noise issue that the XM4s had when the active noise cancellation was turned on.
