Frequently Asked Questions – See our top picks

Which gaming consoles (i.e., PS4, Xbox One, etc.) are these gaming headsets compatible with?

We provide a description of the type of gaming consoles each gaming headset is compatible with at the beginning of each review. Some gaming headsets are compatible with virtually all gaming consoles including PS4, Xbox One, PC, Laptop and Mac devices, although some headsets are built specifically for PC devices or PS4. It depends on each individual gaming headset and their specifications. For gaming headsets that support Xbox One, do note that you may require an additional adapter for the gaming headset if you are using the old Xbox controller. Headsets with USB connection usually support PC devices and also have built-in LED functionality.

Do these gaming headsets support virtual 7.1 surround sound?

Some of these gaming headsets support 7.1 surround sound, which means that you get a more spacious and omni-directional sound experience to immerse you in the in-game environment. This is particularly helpful for FPS or MMORPG genres where stealth and tactics plays a crucial role in winning the game – having the ability to listen in on your opponent’s footsteps can give you an in-game advantage. Do not that not all gaming headsets on this list support virtual 7.1 surround sound as this will largely depend on the gaming headset specifications. Some gaming headsets only support stereo sound output which distinguishes between the left and right channels. While this does give you a sense of direction (i.e., left or right) where each sound is coming from, it is not a true virtual 7.1 surround sound experience. Please check the detailed specifications of each gaming headset to determine if it supports 7.1 virtual surround sound; you may also have to install additional software on your gaming PC to enable 7.1 sound on your headset.

Do these gaming headsets come with a microphone?

All of the gaming headsets on this list come with a built-in microphone for you to communicate with your teammates while playing in-game. Some headsets also have noise cancelling functionality built into the microphone which cancels unwanted background noises so that your teammates will not feel distracted by background noises. Do note that you may require a split adapter for some headsets (one for the audio and the other for the microphone) for PC devices and we would recommend checking if the headset comes with a split adapter in the package.

LED lighting

Some of the gaming headsets on this list support LED lighting – this provides LED lights on the headset that cycle through multiple colors which looks really stunning and can provide really cool gaming vibes. The LED light functionality does not affect sound performance. Do note that some gaming headsets require you to plug the headset into a USB power source before the LED lights will work. Not all gaming headsets on this list have built-in LED lighting so if this feature is important to you, we would recommend checking the headset specifications to see if it has LED light built into the headset.
